Anga gadha mithurun means, big mouthed friends….
This post is about all those gossipers out there.. *pout* Certainly not my friends, yet big mouthed gossipers!
A conversation at dinner led me to the topic of gossipers.. I can’t remember the amount of gossips I’ve heard from people all my life.. Stories about my family, friends, neighbors, people I don’t even know and even stories about myself! (The stories about me usually turn out to be completely new knowledge for me as well!) So the conversation got me thinking.. What is with these gossipers?!
Gossipers range from, grandma’s who has nothing better to do, housewives who chitchat between themselves after a hard days work, School mates who need to entertain themselves during break time, Colleagues with “free” work hours, and coffee lovers who need a good subject of discussion! The classical myth is “women tend to gossip more than men”.. But I totally disagree, men and women alike, indulge in this sick habit..
What ticks me off the most is, the fact that gossips lead to rumors which are outrageous lies that anyone can clearly see if they paused for a second and thought about what’s coming out of their mouths.. I questioned my mind, how anyone could possibly just sit there are make up a big fat lie.. Doesn’t it affect their morale’s or conscience? Doesn’t it make them even a teensy bit uncomfortable about the fact that a good chat could ruin someone’s lives? I came to the conclusion that gossipers are so into this habit of theirs that they don’t even realize when they make up something.. *pause to think*
For example.. Lets say there is an Aisha.. And that she has a handful of women neighbors, who meet up almost everyday for a chat over a cuppa in the evening.. It so happens that this certain day, one of the women had spotted Aisha, in her school uniform on the back of a bike, driven by a strange boy.. Here’s how I imagine the conversation would go…
Fathuma: Guess what?! You know that Aimina’s daughter Aisha? I saw her today.. She was in her school uniform, on the back of a bike driven by a strange boy!
*Unanimous Gasps!*
Siththi: You don’t say Fathima! Aimina’s Aisha?
Fathuma: And this also, during school hours!
Zuleykha: Tsk tsk! I wonder who that boy was.
Fathuma: It certainly wasn’t someone that Aimina knows. I have never seen that boy before. Aisha had a scared look on her face.
Siththi: Must be a boyfriend! She must have been scared that she might get caught!*makes a disgusted face* I would never let any daughter of mine act in such a way.
Zuleykha: Why, she must have been bunking off and going about with her boyfriend!
Fathuma: *nods* Yes, Yes. I thought so too.
Siththi: *sighs* Well, what can you expect with parents like Aimina
*Mutual nods of agreement*
Zuleykha: Aimina is too social, too busy building her career.
Siththi: True True. No wonder Aisha is turning out like that
Fathuma: I always expected Aisha to turn out like that. *snooty voice*
End of conversation
Sheesh! I wonder if that’s how it goes..?? *mind boggled*
See, you can so easily tarnish someone’s reputation.. Before you can open your mouth to say ‘stop!’, this story would spread like wild fire. Fathuma, Siththi and Zuleykha would happen to tell other friends of theirs, who would pass in onto their own friends in turn…and it will go on and on..
Aisha’s reputation is destroyed over a single cup of tea. When we take a closer look at the situation, things are so different from what they looked like. Aisha had fallen sick in school, her mother who was busy at work, had sent a colleague to take Aisha on the bike to the hospital. The colleague had been mistaken as Aisha’s boyfriend since he was a stranger. He was labeled a stranger based on the fact the neighbors hadn’t seen him in Aimina’s house. Did Fathuma have the right to make that judgment? The scared look on Aisha’s face was merely a look put on her face by her illness. And just because Aimina was a corporate woman, does it mean she’s too social and doesn’t carry out her parental duties..??
Gossips and Gossipers make me sick! There’s nothing more to be said on that subject except………

hehe true..but gossiping is fun actually..if gossip wasn't born to earth, we all would be silent i guess =p
You know actually I see this alot in Maldivians..A person can't live his own life without another person interfering and making up stories..Mostly it's in the older generations...They have old 'hiyaalu's' or whatever...So what if a girl get's on boy's cycle...they don't have to be together to take a ride shoud they? A girl could have lots of guy friends...that doesn't make her a 'slut'..simply they need to change their attitude.
btw nicely written :)
